As a mechanic and owner/operator, here are my money saving recommendation’s that I follow to increase profitability.
Here is a adequate fuel saving list I have put together, which is not in any specific order of importance and that can be implemented right away.
The list does not factor in performance add-ons (manifolds, turbo’s, mufflers and tuners), or general maintenance which I do advise keeping up on.
- Tire Pressure – Low tire pressure is a large contributor to higher fuel consumption. Ensure that tire pressure is maintained at recommended air pressure marked on the tires.
- Alignment – Out of alignment vehicles (Tractor/Trailer) not only consumes more fuel, but prematurely wears out the tires and wheel bearings. I always recommend having all axels aligned.
- Oil Changes – New fluids always improve engine performance over old fluids, which improves fuel consumed.
- Engine Idling – Diesel engines consume a lot of fuel idling, as well higher maintenance cost as a result of more soot in the engine, so limit the time that the vehicle idles.
- Air Filters – Keep your air filters clean and replace as recommended. A engine can only perform as good as its ability to breath.
- Speed – The faster you drive the harder the engine has to work, the more fuel your vehicle will consume.
- Heavy Acceleration – Heavy acceleration not only consumes more fuel, but is hard on the drivetrain. Start out slower and build up your speed.
- Clean Vehicles – Dirty equipment creates more air resistance which consumes more fuel, so keep the exterior of the vehicles washed and waxed.
- Brakes/Wheel Bearings – Dragging brake shoes or wheel bearings will consume more fuel, make sure the brakes and wheel bearings are adjusted correctly. A thermal gun/devise is worth the minimal cost to ensure the wheel hubs are not over heating.
